The Sahara Bank (Arabic: مصرف الصحارى) is a libyan commercial bank, established in 1964. The bank performs retail and corporate banking operations and its head office is located in Tripoli.The Sahara Bank was established in 1964, as subsidiary of Banco di Sicilia.[1] On 22 December 1970, a law was passed that demanded that all the foreign banks shares be nationalized and became completely owned by Libya. As of 1991, the principal share holder was Central Bank of Libya with 82 per cent and Libyan Interests with the rest of 18 per cent. The bank had 751 employees in its roles. The head office of the bank was located in Libya's capital, Tripoli. The bank was counted as one of the ten major banks under the control of Central Bank of Libya.

Libyan Foreign Bank (LFB) was established in 1972 in Tripoli, Libya as Libyan Arab Foreign Bank; it was renamed Libyan Foreign Bank in 2005. It was Libya's first offshore banking institution licensed to operate internationally. The Central Bank of Libya owns 100% of LFB. The head office is located in Libya's capital Tripoli.Since 2010, the bank owns 84% of British Arab Commercial Bank, and 68% of Banca UBAE (Est. 1972) in Rome.[a] On 12 March 2011, the Bank of Italy placed Banca UBAE under special administration following the European Council's decision to freeze Libyan banking assets. The intent was to ensure that the bank could continue to operate normally, and in conformity with international policies.

The National Commercial Bank was established as a Libyan joint stock compny with a capital of 500 million Libyan dinars under the provisions of Law No. 153 of 1970, in 22/12/1970. Since its establishment, more than of 69 branches have been opened around Libya. NCB has achieved a record growth in the size of its assets in 2017, which amounted to more than 22,5 Billion Libyan dinars, and the Net Profit in 2017 reached around 100 million Libyan dinars with 19% increase compared with 2016.

Aman Bank for Trade and Investment was established in Libya in 2003 under license No. 140 issued by the Minister of Finance and with the approval of the Central Bank of Libya in accordance with Banking Law No. 1/1993.Aman Bank was one of the first banks to start operating during that time according to this law, that was later replaced by Banking Law No. 1/2005 which specifies Article 65 for the activities authorized for commercial banks in Libya.

On the 13th of November 1969, the Act to change the names of commercial operational banks in the country to Arabic names was issued. So the name of the bank was changed from Banco di Roma to Umma Bank. And on the 22nd of December 1970 another Act was issued to nationalize all quotas of foreign banks operating in the country to become fully owned by Libya, so Barclays Bank was renamed Jumhouria Bank.On the 10th of April 2008 the Central Bank of Libya issued its decision to merge the two banks of Umma and Jumhouria into one bank under the name "Jumhouria Bank" with a budget amounting to 20 billion LYD, thus the Bank became the second biggest Libyan bank after the Libyan Foreign Bank.
