A. Nur-Sultan, known initially as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, and most recently Astana, is the capital city of Kazakhstan. The town acquired its present name on 23 March 2019, following a unanimous vote in Kazakhstan's parliament. It was named after Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan, from 1990 to 2019.

The city's former name Astana comes from the Kazakh word for capital. In the 19th century, it was called Akmolinsk (from Kazakh: Ақмолинск) or Акмола (Akmola) in Russian. From 1961 to 1992, it was called Tselinograd (Russian: Целиноград).
