Awash Bank was established by 486 founding shareholders with a paid-up capital of Birr 24.2 million and started banking operations on Feb. 13, 1995. As of end of June 2020 the number of shareholders and its paid-up capital increased to over 4369 and Birr 5.87 billion, respectively. Oromia International Bank S.C began operation on 25 October 2008 with a starting capital of 110 million birr (Br), surpassing the minimum capital requirement by 35 million Br. With its headquarters located in front of Dembel City Centre, near Getu Commercial Center in its own 13 story building on Africa Avenue (Bole Road). Established with the commercial banking business objectives, OIB is undertaking a universal commercial banking services such as deposit mobilization, lending of money, remittance service, and international banking services and interest free banking.

The establishment of Lion International Bank S.C., on October 2, 2006 in accordance with Proclamation No፡ 84/94 and Commercial Code of Ethiopia has marked a shift in ownership as the company based its roots in a larger number of shareholders than any other Bank has had during the time and has become a pioneer for the Banks that came later. Cooperative Bank of Oromia is a private commercial bank in Ethiopia. As of June 2021, the bank has about 7.73 million account holders, which makes the bank the leading private bank in this regard. The bank has 469 branches, of which more than 80% are outside the capital where the industry average is still less than 60%, this is a clear indication of the bank's focus to the grassroots level. According to the June 2021 report, Cooperative Bank of Oromia (Coopbank) has ETB 81.54 billion in assets, ETB 4.65 billion capital, and ETB 72.69 billion in deposits, making the bank among the top three private banks in the country on major indicators. Moreover, the bank amassed a profit of ETB 2.39 Billion (Before provision and depreciation).

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) is the largest commercial bank in Ethiopia. As of June 2015, it had about 303.6 billion Birr in assets and held approximately 67% of deposits and about 53% of all bank loans in the country. The bank has around 22,908 employees, who staff its headquarters and its over 1000+ branches positioned in the main cities and regional towns. The latter include 120 branches in the national capital Addis Ababa. With the opening of a branch in the Gechi in the Illubabor Zone , CBE's banking network has reached online 783 branches. The bank has reached 1284 branches as of 10 August 2018.

Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) is a specialized state owned development financial institution, which is supervised by the Public Financial Enterprises Agency in Ethiopia.The Development Bank of Ethiopia was the first development finance institution in Ethiopia and as such it was designed to: "(a) assist in the development of industrial and agricultural production... (and) (b) foster the investment of private capital for productive purposes.

Wegagen Bank SC (Amharic: ወጋገን ባንክ) is a bank in Ethiopia incorporated on 11 June 1997. It came to life as a result of the entrepreneurial wit of sixteen 16 founding members who recognized the critical role that financial institutions would play towards creating a sustained economic development and were able to put in an initial paid-in capital of Birr thirty million (Birr 30 Million).Established under the banking proclamation of Licensing and Supervision, Proclamation No. 84/1994, the Bank was registered with the National Bank of Ethiopia on 30 April 1997.
